Croning Cloak

The Croning Cloak

Our Croning Cloak is a cloak of many stories. A patchwork of Herstory and if you listen you will
hear the quiet voices woven into the stitches and beads and fabric.

Inspired by our meeting with the mighty Coat of Hopes, as it travelled through Hastings and Eastbourne, the Cloak is ever growing and filling with your ideas on the following themes:

  • Third Moon events you have enjoyed

  • Stories of women you would like to celebrate- famous, infamous or familial-all have their place on the Cloak.

  • Something about your own croning journey that you would like to mark.

Wehave featured some of the beautiful panels and their stories here on the website, over time, and we are starting with this very beautiful needle-felted piece.

Look closely and you will see the distinctive meanders of the River Cuckmere, in Kerry’s work. This is her story about the square she made:

‘My design illustrates my personal love for Sussex and my connection to the Cuckmere and view from High‘n’Over. It also speaks of overcoming health battles that both myself and my Mum have faced.

I was born in Eastbourne and lived here all my life as have my family over several generations.

High‘n’Over  is somewhere we have visited many times as a family and so holds a special place in my heart.

I have faced many health battles in my life and always found comfort in the beauty of our local countryside and woodland. Both my Mother and I have had major bowel surgery resulting in ileostomies.

This has meant that we have had second chances at life and so a kind of metamorphosis had to take place as we had to get used to our bodies changing and a new way of living. I have included an Orange Tip Butterfly which is to represent me, and a Dragonfly to represent my Mum, after having to face these challenges and then starting new phases of our lives.

I have also included, in the bottom right of the Square, an embroidered depiction of a Round- headed Rampion ‘The pride of Sussex’, which is the flower of our County, as I am proud to be a Sussex girl and have a great love for the beauty of our countryside and Downland.

I created the square by painting with wool, which is a needle felting technique. After finishing the felted design, I hand stitched on the butterfly and Dragonfly wings. I then freehand embroidered the dragonfly body and the Round-Headed Rampion and a border. Finally I added a sequin to the sunset.’

KW (Summer 2025).

Maybe you have a story you would like to weave into the Cloak. We always welcome new pieces. We are looking for stars and moons for the arms and some more squares for the main body of the cloak.

These are new arrivals from the very talented KWH and they are beautiful.

If you would like to sew something of your own, into the folds of this very special piece of artwork, you are very welcome to. Here are a few ideas about how you can go about it:

  • It’s nice to get a group together to sew and catch up. Take your time, have fun, share ideas. The Cloak will be honoured to display what you are able to make together.

  • Work individually and then get in touch with us in the core group, and we will arrange a way of getting your work onto the Cloak.

  • Join one of our scheduled sewing evenings. We tend to run them in the summer, once a month at the Six Bells in Chiddingly and monthly gatherings in Eastbourne. Get in touch with the core team if you fancy joining in, and look out for events posts.
