Imbolc

Brigid Cross

My dear friend Ruthie C and I set out on a small adventure to gather reeds for the making of a St Brigid’s cross. We went down into the wetlands, getting properly muddied, as reeds will have it. It was the first time I had ever gathered them, and I was delighted to find that at their roots they were stained red, like the hair of the Goddess Brigid herself.

Once we returned home, we set to the weaving of our crosses. It is said they should be made on the eve of Imbolc. The work took patience and practice, but I was pleased in the end  my third attempt came together just right.

All were asked to wear something blue for the evening’s Imbolc gathering: a scarf or shawl in honour of Brigid, the colour of her cloak. The traditional Bríde doll was present as well, lending her quiet blessing and keeping the old ways close.

It was a gentle and meaningful evening, held in reverence and respect for all faiths and for none. Stories were shared, and candles were lit from Brigid’s flame of Kildare  a treasured light, gifted to Ruth by the nuns of Kildare, and in turn gifted to TMW. The candles were lit, then carried with care into the night by all who attended.
